Heights and Flights workshop Posted: 23/03/2009

Lewis Gill, a PhD student working on the URSULA project, recently attended the “Heights and Flights” workshop hosted by the University of Manchester LandMap service, which provides a website portal that provides access to spatial data for research and teaching purposes.  The LandMap service is free to use and registration is possible via the website if your academic institution already has an agreement with the service.  More information can be found at:

The workshop focused on the capture and usage of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data and featured sessions where attendees could apply some of the techniques discussed.  As part of this workshop, it was announced that various data sets created by The GeoInformation Group ( from their LIDAR flights over the UK are soon to be made available to the academic community via the LandMap service.

This data can help to create accurate three dimensional models of landscapes and could well feed into the visualisation task in URSULA.
